Baby Nimbus Blog

A Conversation with Sunil....

Our goal here at Baby Nimbus is to help promote and support local, upcoming graphic designers, illustrators, artists, or as we like to put it... doodlers. Part of how we do it is by putting their designs out there to let them showcase their talents to you. The votes not only is a way for you to choose which item becomes our next month's feature item, but it's also a way for y'all to give them some encouragement and some feedback.

So another way that we try to promote our doodlers, is to let y'all get to know them a little bit better and give you a little more insight into who they are and what they're all about. So below is a little conversation we had with Sunil, who submitted this month's DoodleClash winner!

BN: Hi Sunil, Congratulations again in winning your Doodle-clash and coming in and allowing us to interromagate you. OK. First question. Where were you born?

S: Brussels, Belgium.  Also the birthplace of Godiva Chocolates!

BN: What was the first thing you remember drawing?

S: A tiger.  It was my favourite animal.

BN: What made you decide to get into design?

S: I’ve always loved to draw, whether it was people, animals or objects. I just enjoyed putting pen or pencil to paper and then drawing whatever was on my mind.

BN: What were you doing at that point in your life?

S: I was finishing school around that time, and when I started working, I enrolled in an Animation and Special Effects program.  I got to illustrate, as well as learn about the design industry.

BN: What was the first design that made you feel like you should become a designer?

S: I designed a logo for a school cafeteria.  I expected the design to be painted over the following year, but it was there for a few years after.  When I asked one of the teachers about it, they said both the students and other teachers liked the design.

BN: What’s your favourite food?

S: I enjoy making pasta dishes and adding my own mix of spices and seasoning to keep it interesting.

BN: Do you have any other hobbies?

S: Being the cool uncle!  When I’m not illustrating, I enjoy playing indoor volleyball over the winter and softball in the summer.  If I have any time left over, I like learning different languages, like German and Mandarin.

BN: What is your favourite colour?

S: Blue

BN: What influences should we find in your designs?

S: Well, growing up, I watched a lot of Japanese animation, so I think a lot of that influence should be found in my character designs.  However, if it cannot be found, then logic would conclude that there were no influences, and I therefore have little to no idea why my designs look the way they do...!

BN: What’s the idea behind your doodle-clash submission?

S: A friend of mine recently got a kitten, and with it’s little stripes it reminded me of a mini-tiger.

BN: Can you tell us a little bit more about Rose?

S: Rose is a pink tiger-cub.  I haven’t decided if she has any super powers, yet…

BN: What made you decide to participate in Baby Nimbus’ doodle-clash?

S: It seemed like a lot of fun to try, and it was!

BN: Is there anything you’d like to say to all those people that voted for your Doodle-Clash submission?

S: Thanks to everyone who voted for both designs.  It was fun to design, and we hope it was enjoyable for everyone else to see and vote.

The following questions originally came from a French series, “Boullion de Culture” hosted by Benard Pivot and were popularised in North America by James Lipton, who asks every guest at the end of “Inside The Actor’s Studio” show.

BN: What is your favourite word?

S: Change

BN: What is your least favourite word?

S: Can’t

BN: What turns you on creatively, spiritually, or emotionally?

S: Being around people who are supportive and encourage you to pursue your goals.

BN: What turns you off?

S: People who choose to be pessimistic and always seem to want to talk about things in a negative manner.

BN: What is your favourite curse word?

S: Hmm, I can’t remember the last time I actually used a curse word.

BN: What sound or noise do you love?

S: Godzilla roaring

BN: What sound or noise do you hate?

S: A car being driven with the handbrake still on.

BN: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

S: Teaching.

BN: What profession would you not like to do?

S: Lion tamer.

BN: If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

S: Would actually look for a tweet: #welcome!

BN: Another big congratulations on the win, and thank you again for being a part of this. It really means a lot to us.

I hope everyone enjoyed this discussion with Sunil. If anyone wants to find out more about Sunil and his designs, see our Doodle Squad, or visit Sunil's own website. I hope everyone's had as much as we've had. We haven't decide whether or not next month's DoodleClash will be online yet as we WILL be doing voting at our Launch Party. I guess y'all will just have to stay tuned and see!

Shout Outs!

So we've recently been working with a couple of really lovely people at CocoonX. If you get a chance, please check out their website. They are part art incubator, part sales-and-marketing company (sound familiar?) for artists. They've kindly invited us to their official launch. It's not too late to get tickets (click here to get tickets). I hope to see y'all there! They've asked us to make some T-shirts with their artwork on it. Hopefully they like the work we do for them.

One of the things I love about what I do is being able to meet interesting like-minded people, and having afternoon meetings with alkiemahall (read: alcohol) out on the patio:

Hopefully, we'll be able to work together moving forward and collaborate on future endeavours also.

I remember in my grade 5 class that there was a banner on the wall. "Change is inevitable". At the time, 'inevitable' was a new word for me, but looking back now, I see that not only is it true, but I think that there needs to be a second statement added. "Change is necessary". Everything we do and endeavour to do, we learn and grow; and little by little, whether we like it or not, we change. Growing up, we learn through lessons gleaned by our own experiences, or by experiences of others. And as we grow up, those lessons become a part of who we are.

Baby Nimbus is still in its infancy. We admit that. And we acknowledge that there is still much to learn and much to experience. As such, we are changing, morphing, and evolving. As with everything in life, it's prudent for us to stop once in a while and look back at what we've been doing and evaluate the things that we've done, things that we've accomplished, and things that we've yet to succeed in. As such, we took a little bit of time over the past couple of weeks to consider how we should move forward.

We always wanted to be a platform to help promote and support local designers, illustrators, and artists. We've always wanted to be a conduit for them to the world, to give them a fun place that they can explore. To that end, we thought that we would do a better job if we made some changes. So over the past several weeks, we've been making quite a few changes and this blog is the first of those changes.

I hope you like the changes that we make and I hope that you continue with us in our journey. Please stay tuned over the next few weeks as we roll out some of the changes that we'll be making and thanks for being patient with us.
